Rose – Rosa

Rose is a woody perennial flowering plant in the family of Rosaceae.  There are more than 100’s of species all over the world. It is native to Asia, Europe, North America and North Western Africa and is best known as ornamental plants for their flowers that spread beautiful fragrances.

They have major applications in perfumes, oils, and powders by crushing rose petals. Rose water is also used in cosmetics, medicinal practices. It is also used in cooking dishes like Barfi, Turkish delight, gulab jamun, halva, jams, and jellies.

Rose Plant Structure

Rose plant can erect shrubs, climbs or trails with stems and often armed with sharp prickles. Flowers are varied in size, shape, and color ranging from white, red, pink and yellow. The plant can grow to a height of 1-2 meters depending on variety. Leaves are borne alternately on the stem and are about 5-15 centimeters long with leaflets. Flowers have 5 petals divided into 2 lobes and 5 sepals below it.

Can I Grow Roses in a Pot?

Growing roses in a pot are easy, takes less time for flowering and acts as air-purifier. Women often love to grow different varieties of roses in their home. Container rose live happily for years and promotes high yielding when you give what they want. The factors that are required to grow roses in a pot or container are listed below.

• Choosing the right variety

  Select the desired rose variety you wish to grow. Purchase them from nursery or online. Avoid growing rose variety such as shrubs and climbing roses that make it difficult to grow in the container.

• Suitable Soil

  Roses grow best in moist well-drained You can also mix potting, loam soil and organic matter that is rich in compost or manure. Now place the soil in a pot or container before planting.

• Water and Sunlight

  Water the plant regularly (in sufficient amounts) so that the soil is moist. Avoid overwatering as it can damage the plant growth. Sunlight is an essential factor for all plants to thrive. Place the pot in sunlight for 8 hours a day. It is responsible for photosynthesis in plants and flower blooming.

• Nutrition deficiency

  Nutrient deficiency is due to the lack of nutrients like Nitrogen, Potassium, and Phosphorus in rose plants. To overcome this problem you need to fertilize the plant that results in better growth.

• Fertilizing

  Though roses are heavy feeders they can survive without fertilizing. If you wish fertilize them, prefer commercial sprays or homemade organic methods. Use the synthetic fertilizer that helps to grow healthy roots, colorful blooms and supply nutrients to the rose plants.

• Pests and Diseases

  Pests like spider mites, beetles, rose chafers and leafcutter bees damages the plant by eating leaves, sticks, and webs on roses stems and leaves. Diseases like powdery mildew, leaf drop, yellow leaves, black spot, canker are may be due to insufficient amounts of water, sunlight, nutrients to the plants.To reduce the effect of pests and diseases keep rose bushes clean, increase air circulation or sprinkle a solution containing baking soda, oil and warm water on rose plants.

• Harvesting

  The plant takes 6-8 weeks for flowering when you plant it in a pot. Harvest rose when flowers bloom especially in a spring or summer season. Select the rose along with the stem to harvest using scissors. Place it in a glass of water until you are ready to use them.

• Feed rose plants on regular basis with mulch or fertilizers.
• Make sure you provide sunlight for a minimum of 6-8 hours a day.
• While harvesting wear gloves to protect your hands from thorns.

• When you transplant roses to outdoors add plenty of organic matter such as compost or manure to the soil.

Grafting Roses

Grafting is a horticultural technique where you can join 2 different plant tissues to form a single hybrid plant and continues their growth. The upper part (stems, leaves, flowers & fruits) is called Scion and the lower part (roots) is called rootstock.

Roses are easy to propagate from cuttings.  Graft shoots by creating a new variety that results in vascular tissue growth. The new shoot is a mixture of 2 varieties, produces beautiful flowers and promotes high yielding for a long time. The t-bud method is the most popular method for grafting roses. Here is the procedure that explains the grafting method in roses.

• Choose the particular time to graft your roses as the plant requires enough nutrients to grow. Best time for grafting is mid-summer season.
• Select scion which is a young stem from the plant to establish leaves and flowers.
• Now select a rootstock plant that is healthy and hard to which the grafted is attached.
• Take a sharp knife and cut a T-shape into the rootstock.
• Cut and trim the stem of scion and insert it into the rootstock. Protect the graft with a tape.
• Water the plant in bulk as it requires plenty of water to thrive and results in high yielding.

Care for Grafting

When you prefer this T-bud method, proper care must be taken for grafting roses.

• Water the rootstock on daily basis to ensure the moist soil.
• Trim off the bud from Scion that begins to grow new buds.
• No need to add fertilizers to the soil when you graft the rose plant.
