Eggshell Seed Starters
Eggshells are biodegradable and used for seed starters. Sterilize the shells by boiling them for 30 minutes. Make a hole at the bottom of the shell for drainage. Add soil and seeds accordingly. When sprouts appear to plant them into the soil.
Start planting seeds in shell indoors before weather permits for outdoor growth. Eggshells are cheap, easily available and it contains full of calcium to boost seedlings.
Fertilizer is a natural or organic material that is applied to the soil or plant tissues. It is used to supply more nutrients for plant growth. Natural and simple way to fertilize plants is by using vegetable cooking water. Water has a lot of nutrients that can improve the beauty of your garden. Let the water be cooled for few minutes and use it to fertilize garden plants. It makes green and a happy garden.
Decide what kind of plant you would like to grow and choose space for it. If you don’t have much space to grow plants you can use Rubbermaid containers. Rubbermaid storage containers are lightweight and available in different colors and sizes. Fill the bottom of the container with marbles, peanuts and allow for draining. Add a layer of fabric to it for easy access.
Now you are ready with Rubbermaid containers to plant. Make sure you provide enough space to grow. After planting add a layer of mulch into the soil as it retains water and protects the soil.
Pot in pot landscaping
Dig a hole and place an empty pot in it. Now you can drop seasonal plants in the pot and maintain properly with adequate water supply and sunlight. Plants thrive faster and result in high productivity. It is easy to switch them out once they are ready.
Keep pets away
Even though you maintain the garden with proper care, pets like dogs, cats and rabbits can damage the beauty of the garden. To keep pets away from the garden, place plastic forks around your plants in the soil from destroying fresh herbs, fruits and vegetables.
Use biodegradable planters
Biodegradable pots are the sustainable segment of container planting. Biodegradable pots are made of wood, fiber or peat pots. Start your seeds in newspaper pots made with pot maker tool. These are the organic containers that can be planted in the garden. These are readily available in the market or can be prepared at home.
To prepare biodegradable planters at your home, you need potting mix soil, scissors, toilet paper and waterproof container.
- Cut toilet paper roll into (1/2) and then make 4 cuts in the roll (1/3) of the way up.
- Now fold the bottom of the paper.
- Fill it with light potting soil and pack them.
- Plant seeds with proper depth and water them.
- When the seeds sprouted you can directly place them in the garden.
Epsom salt in garden
Chemically Epsom salt is hydrated magnesium sulfate (10%-magnesium and 13%-sulfur). Epsom salt helps to improve flower blooming, enhance plants green color, seed germination, production of chlorophyll and strengthen cell walls.
Add few tablespoons of Epsom salt into the water and sprinkle it on plants or you can mix Epsom salt directly with the soil for better growth. Tomato and pepper benefit the most using this method as they both tend to have the magnesium deficiency.
Cinder Block Garden Bed
It is difficult to build raised garden bed using wood. So we opt for cider blocks that can replace wood and makes easy. The hole in cinder block separates herbs. If you have small space, pick 2-4 blocks to create a narrow bed. Now you got a better place to start your own garden bed.
Add soil to the cinder blocks and a layer of rocks for proper drainage. Use potting mix type of soil for starting a garden. There is no restriction to grow any plant in this particular area. Chemicals used in cinder block keeps weeds away from plants.
Baking soda on plants causes no harm and has a wide variety of uses and can be used as the pesticide, pot cleaner, to test soil fertility and make tomatoes sweeter. It is more effective on fruits and vegetables. To sweeten your tomatoes make use of baking soda by lowering acidity of the soil and helps to prevent fungal spores.
Mulch can be of any type that spreads over the surface of the soil. It helps to keep the soil moisture, suppress weeds and makes the garden bed look more attractive. Organic mulch includes composted manure, newspaper and grass also help to increase soil fertility for gardening plants.
Roses in spuds
Choose a stem from a rose that you wish to propagate. The stem should be straight, ripe, young and 9inch long. Cut just below a bud at the base. Remove leaves and thorns from the stem.
Before planting, place bottom end of the stem into a small potato. It keeps the stem moist and develops roots. Now Place (2/3) stem into the soil and the cuttings should be 6inc. apart. Water them regularly and after few weeks you can see beautiful roses blooming.
Homemade Weed Killer
It’s quite difficult for gardeners to separate weeds from plants. You can use commercial sprays which are cost-effective; instead, you can prepare a solution at your home using home ingredients.
To prepare homemade weed killer requires a gallon of white vinegar, a cup of table salt and 1tspn of liquid dawn dish soap. Mix all the ingredients and sprinkle the obtained solution on plants. Be careful as it can be harmful to grass. It’s best to use in wall cracks, borders and other areas where grass, flowers, and other plants won’t be affected.
Plastic pot watering system
Place a pot in the middle of the garden, an easy way for deep root watering. This method is most helpful for squash plants. As long as the root matures they get deeper and deeper into the ground soil. It’s quite difficult to supply water for deeper roots in summer.
To prepare this bed to dig a hole of 2 feet deep and wider. As squash plants require fertile soil for rapid growth put some compost into the pot. Sow seeds into the soil. Once the seeds have germinated, water them at regular intervals. They grow quickly and leaves turn deep green when squash roots hit the compost.
Stop invasive plants
An invasive plant is a name for a species of plants that spreads aggressively in the ecosystem. To stop invasive plants we need a plastic pot and knife. Now cut the bottom of the plastic pot and place it on the ground (for invasive plants) that tends to grow large. It limits the growth of root system, control over the size of the plant and protects surrounding plants.
Homemade Rain Barrel
Rain Barrel method is beneficial during the rainy season. We make use of rain for gardening purpose. Collect the rain directly and to store rainwater you just need large containers or drums. Use it to water your lawn, garden and potted plants for better growth.
Seeds and Citrus
Start your seeds in a citrus peel. Make sure the soil in the citrus peel is well drained. It will compost the soil and nurture the plants. Once they are ready you can plant them in garden soil for high yielding. Do not forget to make a hole in the bottom for proper drainage.
Line pots of coffee filters
Line flower pots with coffee filters keep the soil from falling out. When you water plants regularly there may be chances for soil falling out of the pot. Place coffee filter before you fill the pot with soil. It allows water to drain and keeps the dirt unchanged.
Vinegar in the garden helps to germinate seeds for the plants like moonflowers, okra, and asparagus. For this mix equal amounts of vinegar and water. Soak seeds in this solution and plant them the very next day. The seed germinates quickly when planted in the garden.
Pinch tip of the herbs to encourage the growth of beautiful and healthy new leaves. When you pinch, they send a signal to the neighboring leaf buds to grow.
Packing peanuts in pots
Peanuts in the pot are used for good drainage and perfect lightening in large flowering pots. Peanuts are cheaper than soil. Fill (1/3) full of peanuts into the pot and make sure to add a layer of fabric above soil so that water doesn’t sink at the bottom of the pot.

- Wear safety goggles, shoes, and long pants to prevent injuries while dealing with gardening tools and equipment.
